The necessity for renovation of the dome was observed from the upper balcony. From this vantage point the cracks within the dome are obvious. Some appear to be more than 2 inch across.
The Last Judgment by Vasari and Zuccari is depicted on the dome's interior. The symbolism is intense as several figures within the painting represent unexpected and traumatic scenes of suffering.
